Symantec endpoint client not updating virus definitions

The University Information Security Office (UISO) recommends that you update your virus definitions daily, and scan your computer weekly. Live Update will download the virus definitions from Symantec's site.

Symantec releases program updates on an as-needed basis.

Live Update locates and obtains files from a website, installs them, and then deletes the remaining files from your computer.

Enabling client Live Update may cause an increase in network traffic as each client connects to the internet to download virus definitions.

Once a client has downloaded January definitions from Live Update, the client should remain configured to download content from Live Update until your servers have been patched with a fix for this issue.

On January 5, 2015, Symantec Corporation ended support for version 11.0.x of its anti-virus software, Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Symantec Endpoint Protection version 12.1 can be downloaded at no cost through the Software Download Service at My Pitt.

If you are not certain what version of Symantec Endpoint Protection you are using, launch Symantec and click the “Help” or “Help and Support” button in the upper right-hand corner of the window. If you recently received a pop-up message from Symantec indicating that your virus definition files are out of date, and you are unable to update them, this is another indication that you are using an unsupported version of Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Using one method of updating does not preclude the other.

On the same computer, you can choose to schedule Live Update automatic updates, and also manually use Live Update or run Intelligent Updater whenever you wish to update your virus definitions.

If a client is not receiving updates automatically, follow this process.
